Abhyanga is a self-care practice that goes deeper than its physical benefits. It helps to unwind from the physical body and supports the mental and emotional state.
Charaka Samhita, an ancient textbook, says:
“Giving yourself a daily self-abhyanga with aromatherapy massage oil is a deeply healing and deeply enjoyable Ayurvedic practice that activates the body’s inner pharmacy and slows the aging process. Depending on your unique mind-body type (Dosha), your massage technique can be gentle or vigorous.”
Some benefits of abhyanga:
- promotes healthy sleep
- reduces anxiety and depression
- flushes toxins from the lymphatic system
- improves circulation
and many more!
Start your abhyanga by warming up some sesame or coconut oil by running hot water over the bottle.
Massage your whole body, from your head and neck to your ankles to your toes.
Do it in a very loving and gentle manner.
For joint use, more circular motion and long strokes for your limbs.
Put on some old clothes or a robe, keep your body warm for about 20-30 minutes, and then take a warm shower.
I hope you feel a sense of self-harmony at the end of your Abhyanga massage.
